The day we met someone who changed our lives. A conversation that came at the perfect moment. A Mass. A retreat. A night of prayer. A moment of silence in which something inside us shifted.
Because encountering Christ is not just about learning something about Him.
It is recognizing a presence.
It is discovering that the One we were looking for was already walking beside us.
Like the disciples on the road to Emmaus. They walked alongside Jesus, listened to his words, and spoke with him, but they were still unable to recognize him.
Until the moment came when her eyes opened.
And they understood that He had been there all along.
The Virgin of the Encounter is born from this mystery. From the desire to make visible, through sculpture, that invisible reality: the encounter between God and each one of us.
Mary experienced the encounter with God in a unique way.
At the Annunciation, she received the Word of God in her heart and in her body. Her "yes" made it possible for the Word to become flesh and for God to enter into our history.
She was the first to welcome Christ. The first to carry him within her. The first to behold his face. The first to give him to the world.
And their mission doesn't end there.
Because Mary never invites us to remain only with her.
Mary always leads us to Jesus.
As at Cana, when he points to his Son and says:
"Do whatever He tells you."
That is why Javier Viver has called this work Our Lady of the Encounter . Because Mary accompanies us on our journey until that moment when we too can recognize Christ.
Before Christ remained with us in the Eucharist, Mary welcomed him into her own body.
When she pronounced her "yes" at the Annunciation, the Word became flesh.
God chose to become man and enter our history through a woman.
Mary received Christ into her heart and body. That is why Javier Viver speaks of her as the first tabernacle .
She lived in a unique way what we are called to experience in the Eucharist: receiving Christ and becoming, during that encounter, a place of his presence.
The Virgin of the Encounter embodies precisely that mystery.
Mary appears as the one who welcomes God and, at the same time, teaches us to welcome Him.
Mary was the first tabernacle. And she continues to teach us how to make our lives a place for God.
There is a phrase from Mary that sums up her mission in an extraordinary way:
"Do whatever He tells you."
In Cana, Mary does not take Jesus' place. She points to Him.
She sees the need, intercedes, and then disappears to let her Son act.
This is also Mary's maternal mission in our lives: to accompany us, intercede for us, teach us to listen, and lead us to Christ.
Maria is not the destination of the road.
He is the one who leads us to Him.
The Virgin of the Encounter is born from an idea that has accompanied Javier Viver's work for years: Mary as a place of encounter between God and man.
In this work, two especially important dimensions of his career converge: his artistic vocation and his spiritual vocation, both deeply linked to Mary.
For Javier, a religious image is not merely a representation.
Matter, shapes, volume, face and gaze can become a bridge to a reality that we cannot touch with our senses.
That is why he understands sculpture as a possibility of bringing the invisible closer to our human experience.
"The most supernatural has been embodied in the most human and the most humble."
Mary's own humanity is that bridge. She is truly human, and precisely because of that, her humanity leads us to the divine.
A sculpture begins long before it becomes an image.
It begins with an intuition. With a question. With a search.
Javier works with the material by adding and subtracting: adding where it is lacking, removing where it is superfluous, gradually searching for the form he wants to express.
Then come the details. The texture. The tools. The marks. The precision of the hands. The patient work that transforms matter into an image.
But there comes a point when sculpture ceases to be merely matter.
As Javier explains, there is a moment when the image takes on a life of its own and becomes an icon: a representation through which the presence of Mary can become close.
An image can make visible what the eyes cannot see.
The Virgin of the Encounter wears a crown made of roses and butterflies.
It is not a purely ornamental element. It forms part of the symbolic language of the work.
Javier relates it to the road to Emmaus and to the vocation of encounter that this image has.
The crown also holds a profound spousal meaning. Mary is seen as the Spouse of the Holy Spirit, and through her, the sculpture reminds us that every person is called to an intimate union with God.
From this encounter, a new life is born.
