Bella Pastora

The sculpture of the Our Lady, Bella Pastora, was commissioned by the sculptor Javier Viver on the occasion of the foundation of the new monastery for the sisters of the new community, Iesu Communio, located in La Aguilera (Burgos). Mother Veronica, its foundress, is the one who commissioned the sculpture of Our Lady to be called the White Madonna or Bella Pastora.

Bella Pastora is a life-size sculpture, a pregnant Lady seated with her hands on her chest, her head slightly bent forward, eyes closed and a gesture of prayer.

At first the destination of Bella Pastora would be the hermitage, a place where only the sisters have access. However, when the sculpture arrived at the monastery, they decided to place it in the cloister. The main purpose is that both the sisters of Iesu Communio and pilgrims can visit Our Lady.

The concept of making a seated Madonna arose from the need to create a sculpture that would invite people to come closer and with which everyone could identify. A pregnant Lady carrying the Divine Word inside her. Our Lady with closed eyes that invite to an inner journey, to contemplate all the things that have happened to her.

Bella Pastora should fully reflect the philosophy of the sisters of Iesu Communio. A philosophy that goes from the recollection of the community to the welcoming character they have when they receive pilgrims where they are attended to, listened to and cared for.
